Early retirement

Retiring before the normal retirement age will affect your pension. Here are the key points to consider.

Health and dental coverage in early retirement

When you retire, you are no longer eligible for the extended health care and dental coverage you may have received through your employer. However, you may be eligible for health and dental coverage through BC’s Teachers' Pension Plan.

When you retire, you can enrol yourself, your spouse and/or eligible dependants in the voluntary extended health care and dental plans. The premiums for this coverage will be deducted from your monthly pension payment. If your pension payment does not cover the premiums, you can arrange to pay the coverage carrier, Green Shield Canada, directly through pre-authorized debit.

These are not guaranteed benefits – your coverage, premiums and deductibles may increase, decrease or be eliminated.
